Breaking the Fast

Thank you to all who have visited and commented on this site. It is still a work in progress, but I appreciate your support and insight. As a follow up to yesterday’s post I found an article regarding mindful eating by Bryan Kest. Click here to read.

If we are following the  principle of observing (previously discussed), we will eat to achieve optimal performance. A common misconception is that we need to eat a large amount to perform well, when in fact, less can be more.

On that same note, let’s transition into today’s topic- Breakfast. Why would I title it breaking the fast? Well each morning we are breaking the fast our digestive tract has had. Those of you who have participated in an active cleanse know how important it is to introduce food back to the body in the lightest form possible.  It is the same with our initial meal of the day. Our bodies have taken the night to heal to cleanse. It is important to take this into consideration when choosing your morning meal. Why not begin your day in the cleanest way possible.

What would a clean breakfast include? If our goal is to maximize our energy and keep our gastrointestinal tract clean, foods with a high-water content are best, including fruits, vegetables and their juices.

Mindful Eating

As a yoga enthusiast/practitioner I have become a student of mindfulness. I believe it is one of the greatest challenges in life- to stay present moment by moment. Recently many individuals have expressed concerns  regarding overeating, inspiring a post on this topic. Most overeating occurs from taking a mindless approach to nutrition.

Not sure if you eat mindlessly. Allow me to paint you a picture. Have you ever opened your refrigerator door grabbing one of the first things you see and proceed to shovel this concoction into your mouth without noticing the flavor, texture, and  temperature of the food? Or perhaps you have polished off a bowl of popcorn during a movie night simply because it was on your lap.

Two of the greatest principles of yoga can help us on this front – intention and awareness (mindfulness). Would you shovel large portions of food into your mouth if you were being mindful? Would you venture to eat foods which hindered you body’s ability to thrive and develop?

Yes… Yes… Many of us know that we could learn a think or two about mindfulness, but how do we change?

Here are some suggestions:

1. LISTEN

Listen to your body. Can you detect signals of hungry or satiety?

2. OBSERVE

Before eating observe how you are feeling. Are you emotional? Are you hoping to stuff away your current thoughts/feelings? Or are you eating for energy/overall health and performance. Be willing to be honest with your answers.Refrain from justifications.

2. EXPRESS GRATITUDE

Pause before a meal and give thanks. Whether in a formal prayer form or just in thought. It is difficult to check out when gratitude is on the scene.

Just three simple steps and you are on your way to eating with awareness and consciousness.

The Essence of Nutrition

I believe education is essential when attempting to make lifestyle changes. Once you understand sound concepts you begin to own them… to make them yours. It becomes easier to make changes as your desire increases. I wonder how much better off we would all be if we put more research into our decisions. I think we have all fallen prey to blindly following others advice or counsel.  Imagine if we made educated, conscious decisions.

There are many different diets out there with many labels and guidelines. Rather than advocating one particular way I would suggest observing how specific foods make you feel. Do some leave you feeling lethargic, bloated, uncomfortable, or achy?  Sometimes you may feel sick or uncomfortable after eating and have a difficult time pinpointing the culprit. A food journal can help decipher the problematic food by identifying patterns.

The most sound nutritional advice I have read is to eat food as close to its natural state as possible. This would incorporate many fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, beans, grains, etc… In essence nutrient dense foods= best health.

Simply Natural

I have always found the most important things in life to be of a simple nature. By this I do not mean easy to apply or practice, but uncomplicated. Health is no different. The practices (meaning repeated performance…requiring consistency) that manifest a healthy life are straightforward. To be balanced and well: exercise, proper nutrition, emotional stability, and overall contentment must be present. This blog is written in an effort to promote wellness and encourage health on every level. Key principles of wellness will be discussed, and ideas for their application suggested. As you read about various topics, I encourage you to put the suggestions into practice. Simply notice if these changes resonate with your own body and belief system. Learn to trust yourself and your own judgment as you are ultimately responsible for your own health.
